Quality sleep is life-changing. At Zway, it’s our goal to help people not only sleep better, but to improve the quality of their lives—economically, emotionally, and physically. We want everyone to achieve optimal sleep. Here’s why.
Your body needs restorative, deep sleep.
During the night, our body cycles through different stages of sleep. One of the most important is NREM stage 3 Deep Sleep (also known as N3 or slow-wave sleep, your deepest sleep state). This restorative stage of deep sleep is crucial for brain and body health, it gives the brain a chance to rest and recover, create and store memories, and function properly. The body undergoes many restorative functions in Deep Sleep.
Stages of Sleep
Stage 1: Falling Asleep
- • Body releases
- • Brain is still active
- • Easy to wake
Stage 2: Light Sleep
- • Heart rate & breathing slows
- • Body temperature falls
- • Brain prepares for Stage 3
Stage 3: Deep Sleep
- • Body physically repairs
- • Immune system strengthens
- • Brain recovers & stores memories
Stage 4: Dreaming
- • Known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
- • Body is temporarily immobilized
- • Dreams begin
Missing sleep has serious long-term effects.
Lack of restorative, deep sleep over time has a bigger impact on your body than you think. Most adults need at least 7 to 9 hours of overall sleep (including enough deep sleep) in order to feel rested, but almost half of all U.S. adults do not get the recommended amount. Research has shown that lack of deep sleep can lead to a whole host of issues:
- Increased risk of immune system dysfunction, memory problems, and health issues like dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
- Exacerbated mental health issues and feeling overwhelmed by the normal responsibilities of daily life.
- Experience more stress, anxiety and depression.
- Show less productivity and less creativity.
- Experience more anger, agitation and feeling short-tempered.
- Reduced productivity
- Higher accident rates
- Lower athletic skill levels
- Underperformance in educational attainment
Longer time spent in deep sleep each night adds up to life changing results over time.
Studies show that getting enough restorative, deep sleep can help you feel refreshed, experience improved health, better aging, and be at your best. Benefits of deep sleep include:
- Improved energy and stamina.
- Better physical health, strengthened immune system and fewer medical issues.
- Benefits long-term mental health.
- Better memory and learning ability.
- Improved aging and reduced pain.
- Feel more productive and creative.
- Declarative memory improvement
- Improved athletic ability
